The typical bridge consists of two crowns that are placed on two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth). The crowns support the artificial teeth that fill the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is a fixed restoration and can be a solution to many esthetic and functional problems that can occur in your mouth when one or multiple teeth are missing. Some of the reasons for needing a bridge include the following:
- Fill the spaces of missing teeth
- Prevent remaining teeth from drifting position
- Restore chewing and speaking ability
- Restoration of smile
There is a variety of different types of bridges, depending on the material and technique used. Your dentist will propose which option fits your particular needs. The most commonly used is the metal –ceramic bridge, due to its strength and durability.
